MAP Configuration and Probe Location Configuration

Hawkeye has a built in feature to configure geographical maps for displaying the probes physical location.

The feature is built on top of Google Maps application.

  • The probe coordinates must be available to display the probe on the map. There is no GPS device installed on the probes.
  • The Hawkeye Server must have internet access in order to able to access Google Maps.

To start the map configuration process, select Dashboards then select Maps button and select Edit Maps at the top right of the screen. From the Map Configuration screen select the + Create button. The following window will be available:

On the left side, the Google map is displayed, on the right side the configuration area.

Complete the following steps to configure map.

  1. Browse to the desired area and zoom at the desired level.

  2. When the position is set, define the map name.

  3. Select the Get Coordinates button.

  4. Select the Update Map button to save the new center of the map.

In the example below, the desired map is the map of the United States, at a zoom level of 4.

Once the position is set and the Get Coordinates button is pressed, the coordinates and zoom level will be automatically filled in the specific fields.

After the position is set, the next step is to assign probes on it.

  1. When creating/editing a map, the left column (available for map) of probes lists the available probes. When you move the probe to the right column (selected for map), the probe is placed on the map. The system uses the google latitude/longtitude co-ordinates that were previously defined for the map creation. The probe is automatically placed at the configured position.

  2. If no coordinates are configured for the probe, it appears in the center of the map and you can manually place the probe at the desired location.

To do this, complete the following steps:

    1. Select the probe from the Available for map group and add it to Selected for map group.

    2. After the probe is in the Selected for map group, select it. A marker automatically drops on the map.

The marker always drops in the same position for all probes that are configured to be displayed on the map.

    3. Drag the probe to the required position on the map.

    4. After the marker is on the position, the coordinates of the probe are stored for that map.

    5. To configure the next probe, repeat these steps.

After all the probes are placed in the required locations on the map, to save it, select Create Map or Update Map.

By default the map is available for all groups of users and it is assigned to all meshes.

If a map is configured for a particular group of users, the administrator has the option to assign it only to that particular group. To do this, while configuring the map, select the group to which the map will be assigned from the “Associated group” and save the map.

If the Associated group is particular, the map will be available only for that particular group and for the system administrator.

Maps can be defined to track the status of probes for only certain tests. By default, if a probe is on a map, any test type or mesh test will be reflected. The map can be configured to only reflect the status of a certain Mesh or test type. Refer to the Associated Mesh or Associated Test Type to achieve this.

You can build multiple maps and all are listed in Maps Management.

This menu offers the possibility to edit and remove maps. Also, the user can check quickly which probes are assigned to a map by expanding the desired map field.

To view the active status of a map, select Dashboards, select MAPS, then choose the map to monitor results.

The desired map will be displayed and the results of the tests that are executed between probes or inside the mesh.

To check details about the metrics measured on a particular path, select the line that connects those two points. A pop-up window will appear, showing the test details.

If the Hawkeye user, wants to check a different map, can do that by selecting it from the drop down list located on the bottom of the page.

For system administrator users all maps are available. For group administrator users only the maps assigned to their group will be available.

A map can be configured only by users with administrator privileges.
