Continuous

Ping

Description

The continuous ping tests to a destination URL or another endpoint.

Purpose

This test is used to continually check the availability of the destination and measure Round Trip Time (RTT).

Available Options
  • IPv6

  • Interval Between Pings (ms)

  • Packets Per Result

  • Packet Size

  • DSCPT

  • imeout(ms)

  • TTL

  • Local Source Address

The results cannot be reported on an interval less then 2 minutes. Example: 1000 ms Interval Between Pings with 120 Packets Per Result means one result reported to the server every 120 seconds.

Metrics
  • Average, Max, Min and standard deviation for Round Trip Times (RTT)

  • TTL

  • Packet loss rate

  • Packets sent/received

Advanced Information

This test sends ICMP packets and listens for responses.

Up to 10 destinations can be selected for each endpoint.

Results interpretation

The ICMP packets detect any obvious issues on the network (congestions, drops, long response time, instable response time). It is an interesting data point, because a change in the average of an ICMP test likely reflects some modification of the network average. The results must however be interpreted with care, beause the ICMP packets are usually treated with lower priority than data packets by network elements. Therefore, this treatment can result in worst behavior than actual user traffic (prioritized) experiences in some cases.

Potential Errors

Web Page Download

Description

The continuous HTTP request packets sent to a destination URL. Upto 10 destinations can be selected for each endpoint.

Purpose

To configure test once, so that the endpoint continuously reports test results.

Available Options
  • Interval Between Tests

  • IPv6

  • DNS Server

  • Proxy Server

  • Proxy Username

  • Proxy Password

  • CA Certificate

  • Client Certificate

  • Client Key

  • Client Password

  • User Agent

Metrics
  • Average connect time

  • DNS resolution time

  • Min/average download rate

  • Max connect time

  • Max SSL time

  • Max time to first byte

  • The number of files downloaded

  • Overall download rate/size/time

Advanced Information

This test downloads elements in a web page providing user experience in getting information from the associated URL.

Up to 10 destinations can be selected for each endpoint.

  • CA Certificate is used to verify the peer. If no certificate is entered in the CA Certificate, Peer Certificate Authentication is not performed.

  • Client Certificate is used to validate the identity of a client (user). It works as a password without any intervention or input from the user. In this way, the server makes sure that it is connecting to the permitted user and the connection is safe to communicate with.

  • Client Key is the Private Key associated with the Client Certificate.

  • Client Password is the password for the Client Key.

The Client Certificate and the Client Key can be concatenated into one file and entered into the Client Certificate.

To move certificates into the Hawkeye system, use the Upload Files button. This will allow the user to upload file types: pem, key, and crt. Certificates can also be removed from the Hawkeye system from the Upload Files window.

After certificates have been moved to the Hawkeye system, they will appear in the certificate Select file pulldown selection menus.

Results interpretation

The result must be reflective as the user experience getting from a browser to the web page.

Potential Errors

Wi-Fi

Description

Gathers wireless information on wireless interface of endpoint. No traffic is generated.

Purpose

To configure test once, so that the endpoint continuously reports WIFI information.

Available Options

Interval Between Tests

Metrics
  • Wifi Available

  • Wi-Fi Channel

  • Wi-Fi Frequency

  • Wi-Fi Link Speed

  • Wi-Fi RSSI

Advanced Information

Data is collected about the current Wi-Fi Connection.

Results interpretation

RSSI is not reported in dbm. This signal Quality metric is dependent on the wifi device manufacturer. The general rule — higher the RSSI, better is the signal quality.

Potential Errors

See Common Errors - Real Services.htm.

Echo TCP

Description

Echo TCP tests the operation of echo port at the server. It sends TCP packets of a configured size to a destination (server) on a specified port. It possesses ability to use port other than the standard echo port 7.

Purpose

To configure test once, so that the endpoint continuously reports Echo TCP test metrics.

Available Options
  • IPv6

  • Port

  • Interval Between Packets (ms)

  • Packets Per Result

  • DSCP

The results cannot be reported on an interval less then 2 minutes. Example: 1000 ms Interval Between Pings with 120 Packets Per Result means one result reported to the server every 120 seconds.

Metrics
  • Total bytes sent/received

  • Total packets sent/received

  • Min/Avg/Max RTT

  • Packet loss rate

  • Total time

Advanced Information

This test sends TCP SYN packets and listens for SYNACK responses.

Up to 10 destinations can be selected for each endpoint.

Results interpretation

The TCP response round trip and packet loss provides good information about the network transport to TCP remote ends.

Potential Errors

See Common Errors - Real Services.htm.

Echo UDP

Description

Echo UDP tests the operation of echo port at the destination Server. It sends UDP packets of a configured size to a destination (server) on a specified port. It possesses ability to use port other than the standard echo port 7.

Purpose

To configure test once, so that the endpoint continuously reports Echo UDP metrics.

Available Options
  • IPv6

  • Port

  • Interval Between Packets (ms)

  • Packets Per Result

  • DSCP

Results cannot be reported on an interval less then 2 minutes. Example: 1000 ms Interval Between Pings with 120 Packets Per Result means one result reported to the server every 120 seconds.

Metrics
  • Total bytes sent/received

  • Total packets sent/received

  • Min/Avg/Max RTT

  • Packet loss rate

  • Total time

Advanced Information

This test sends UDP packets and listens for UDP packet responses.

Up to 10 destinations can be selected for each endpoint.

Results interpretation

The UDP response round trip and packet loss provides good information about the network transport to UDP remote ends.
