Threshold Management

Thresholds are the baseline to decide if tests are passing or failing. Setting up correct thresholds is essential for understanding the test results and making sure that the right level of information is in the database. Auto-learning of key thresholds can also be enabled to ensure they are adjusted to your specific network conditions.

View the Default Thresholds

To check the thresholds configured by default in the application, select the Global Threshold located at the top of the Tests page.

The list of available test types, corresponding pairs and metrics will be displayed:

Different thresholds can be filtered based on test types, pair names, and metrics.

The following information per test type, pair name and metric is displayed:

  • Default threshold: this is a system wide default threshold for the metric. The value is a float.
  • Threshold type: currently three types of thresholds are supported:
    • <=: the test result value will PASS if the result is less or equal to threshold. Any result value above threshold will FAIL. Example: delay or jitter measurements.
    • =>: the test result value will PASS if the result is greater or equal to threshold. Any result value below threshold will FAIL. Example: throughput.
    • %: this defines a percentage of expected throughputs. This threshold is uniquely supported for throughput and test types where user can define throughput (bit rate) value. The test will PASS if the expected % of generated throughput is reached, it will fail otherwise.
  • Record timing records: during some tests supported by Hawkeye, some timing records will be recorded during the test allowing Hawkeye to store information of behavior of test. This will depend on the test type and will be available when selecting individual test report (see browsing test results section).
  • Auto Learned Threshold: When “ON” the thresholds value will be determined utilizing the results of the previous tests runs. See Configure Auto Learn Threshold.

Change the Default Thresholds

Only users with administrator privileges can change default thresholds.

The default thresholds can be changed from the default threshold page.

By selecting the pencil button, the threshold will be automatically selected.

The Threshold Details screen allows to change the value of the threshold, threshold type, and enable Autolearning.

To change the default threshold, edit the Threshold value field, configure the new value and select Update Threshold.

Configure Threshold per Test

Hawkeye application offers the possibility to change a specific threshold per test that will be configured to run either in a node to node topology, mesh or real service scenario.

To configure the threshold per test, select any test execution module. On the panel, where the test parameters are configured, select Show threshold option button. The available thresholds for the selected test type will be available. In the example below, the available thresholds for node to node, DNS response time are shown:

The parameters that you can be change are:

  • Threshold value
  • Threshold type
  • Enable Auto Learn
  • Auto Learn Tolerance
  • Enable Outlier Detection
  • Outlier Parameters. See Configure outlier

The threshold is changed only for the current test configuration. If a new test of the same type is configured, for which the same thresholds must be configured, the thresholds must be configured again in test configuration process. If the thresholds must be changed globally, follow the steps mentioned in the Change the default thresholds section.
