Example of optimization of a running system

After Hawkeye server has been running for a while, it helps to review Optimization. Confirm system resources and adjust configuration.

From the command line on the Hawkeye server (ssh or bitwise) determine resources used matches configuration:

# cat /proc/meminfo

The value for MemTotal identifies allocated space example. 4 Gb.

The value of MemFree identifies how much free RAM is available, example 256 Kb. This shows with a running system how much RAM is used to run current scheduled tests and how much RAM is available for other activities such as generating reports.

#df

This command identifies how much disk space is being used, for example 54 Gb used out of 256 Gb disk drive.

For test results stored (in this example 54 Gb) and having only 4 Gb of available RAM is undersized.

# lscpu

This indicates for example we have 2 Core CPU’s

This example has two CPU’s, 4 Gb RAM, and a 54 Gb database. To process reports for such a large database this is considered undersized.

As the Hawkeye server has an approximate 54 Gb database to process the default MariaDB configuration needs to be changed. It is advised to configure 25% RAM for MariaDB and to increase the number of concurrent accesses to the MariaDB database. This will help report generation. The following changes will be made for this example:

Increase RAM allocated to MariaDB database and increase allowed concurrent connections.

# nano /etc/my.cnf.d/tuning.cnf

max_connections=1000

innodb_buffer_pool_size=1G

In this example due to limited processing resources reduce number of days metrics kept for so reports can be generated more quickly.

On the Hawkeye Server UI, in the System Preferences > Main, make the following changes to keep just 6 months of test results.

  • Set Number of days for database retention to 180.
  • Set Number of days for database retention for detailed metrics to 180.

If the number of scheduled tests are close to maxing out the number of licenses, we recommend you to disable automatic retries of failed tests with the following change. In the System Preferences >Test engine , make the following change:

  • Set Allow_pair_reinit_run to 0.

To reduce amount of individual log files for N2N tests, complete the following:

  • In the System Preferences > Logs, set Log retention Minutes to 120.

When creating or scheduling a report, select specific metrics using options feature instead of all metrics by default. This will allow you to customize the metrics to be included in the report. Fewer the metrics means less processing resources. Thus, less time is needed to generate the reports.
